This condition can be triggered by numerous factors, such as excessive straining, pregnancy, obesity, low fiber intake, frequent heavy lifting, and prolonged sitting. But how exactly does sitting too long contribute to hemorrhoids? Let's explore further.

 

Why Does Prolonged Sitting Cause Hemorrhoids?

Sitting for long durations, especially in improper positions, can exert additional pressure on the blood vessels in the anus. Prolonged sitting, particularly with a forward-leaning posture or on a hard surface, can restrict blood flow to the lower body. For individuals whose jobs require prolonged sitting, the following measures can help reduce the risk of hemorrhoids:

Stand and walk regularly

Take breaks every 30 to 60 minutes to stand and move around. Light physical activity can promote blood flow to the pelvic region and relieve pressure on the blood vessels near the anus.

Do stretching exercises

Incorporate simple stretches or pelvic movements periodically. These exercises can help ease muscle tension in the pelvic area and improve blood circulation.

Use a comfortable chair

Avoid sitting on hard surfaces for long periods. Opt for an ergonomic chair that supports proper posture by providing adequate back and pelvic support. Ensure your sitting position minimizes pressure on the anal area and allows blood to flow more efficiently.

A sitting support cushion can also help alleviate pressure on the anus.

Stay hydrated and eat fiber-rich foods

Adequate water intake and a diet high in fiber are crucial for digestive health and preventing constipation, which is a common trigger for hemorrhoids.

Maintain a healthy weight

Keeping an ideal body weight is essential, as excess weight can increase pressure on the blood vessels in the pelvic region, thereby raising the risk of hemorrhoids.

Avoid delaying bowel movements

Holding in bowel movements can lead to harder stools that are more difficult to pass. This can increase pressure on the blood vessels and elevate the risk of hemorrhoids.

For better bowel movement posture, consider using a stool to elevate your feet while using a sitting toilet.
